Anthony Soave is a senior photography major with a concentration in commercial photography. He’s landed some great professional experience and tells us how using the resources at Columbia helped him put together a professional level portfolio.

Tell us about your photography experience.

I’ve interned at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Time Out Chicago, Amy Braswell Photography and Rick Aguilar Studios. I did everything from shooting and editing photography to assisting within the studio by doing prep work for clients and installing exhibitions.

I also have some freelance experience. I photographed the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October for the NBC5 News website. I am currently working at The Columbia Chronicle as a full time photo editor.

I wouldn't trade these opportunities for anything. The support I've received from all of my internships and work experience has certainly sharpened my skills as a visual artist and I feel confident that I will be successful in my career.

Did Columbia help?

Columbia was a major help in landing these internships! The very first photo course I took at Columbia, Photo I, helped me land two internships. Allison Grant, my professor, referred me to Amy Braswell and the Museum of Contemporary Photography. John Morrison, the internship coordinator from the photo department, also helped guide me get the internship at Time Out Chicago.

What was your favorite/most valuable class you’ve taken so far?

“Commercial Assignment: Layout to Finish” was the most valuable class because my professor, Elizabeth Ernst, pushed me to produce an outstanding body of work. As a result, I created some really heartfelt work that I am extremely proud of. I also learned more about myself as an artist and some invaluable networking skills.

What are you post-graduation hopes?

I want to make a lasting impact on the world with my art. I want to be a photographer and to continue to mature as an whatever capacity that may be—a photographer, a retoucher, a photo editor, or an assistant.

Describe your work in three words.

Animated. Thoughtful. Engaging.

What do you do during your free time?

I tend to indulge in movie marathons in my pajamas with a bowl of cookie dough ice cream. I also like to Skype my parents from home whenever I get the chance.

What’s your favorite place to eat on campus?

My favorite place to eat on campus is Epic Burger. The food is, well, epic! You can’t leave without getting one of their must-have milkshakes, too.
