The Loft Sessions: Deer Emerson Kicks Off New Music SeriesPublished on Apr 08, 2014
The Loft at 916 S. Wabash has always been one of the best places on campus to relax and unwind. They have computers, comfy couches, flat screen televisions, and beanbag chairs. Now they’re adding another cool thing to the list: The Loft Sessions.
A new weekly YouTube series, The Loft Sessions has both upcoming and well-known Columbia artists ditching their amps for a stripped down, bare bones set of soft strings. Each week artists such as The Wild Family, Earl, and this week’s artist, Deer Emerson, will bare some acoustic soul.
What do you get when you cross transcendentalist writer Ralph Waldo Emerson with a wild deer? You get Sara Buzon, who is better known by her stage name, Deer Emerson. She is taking Chicago by storm with just a simple synth, an acoustic guitar, a mask, and a dream. With a unique set of vocals and lyrical choices, most people wonder what it all means, and what Deer Emerson is actually about.
During a recent interview before her first ever Metro performance, Sara explained the origins of Deer Emerson, “For an English class in high school I had to pick an animal as a symbol of who I was, and Native Americans believe that the deer is the most loving and passionate creature in the forest, and that wound up being kind of like my second persona”.
As for Ralph Waldo Emerson, Sara explains, “I just really enjoy his works about self-actualization and realization, and kind of being in tune with the world and yourself. I think lyrically I’m pretty straightforward. I think a lot of, if not all of the songs that I’ve written thus far are about finding yourself.”
A music business major at Columbia College, and an intern at JBTV Music Television, Sara enjoys suiting up in her mask and casually playing famous Chicago venues in her free time. The Metro, which has had performers such as The White Stripes, Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, and Fall Out Boy grace it’s stage, will host Deer Emerson for a second time on April 24th as she performs as part of Columbia’s Biggest Mouth.
Deer Emerson also recently performed at the Vans Village during SXSW, one of the world’s largest film and music hybrid festivals taking place annually in Austin, Texas.
After only moving to Chicago a year ago, Deer Emerson has been hard at work preparing for multiple shows across the city in the weeks ahead. There is no doubt her music is gaining large amounts of attention, and tickets to her shows will sell out fast. In the meantime, you can catch her casually jamming in this week’s installment of The Loft Sessions.
