The Loft Sessions: The Wild Family Takes on Biggest MouthPublished on Apr 15, 2014
Columbia College Chicago’s premier music showcase ”Biggest Mouth” is happening Thursday April 24 at the legendary Metro Chicago. Over 90 bands auditioned this past winter to take place in the Student Programming Board’s annual battle of the bands. In the end, twelve bands/performers were chosen to compete for the title of “Columbia’s Best Performer.” Doors open promptly at 6:00pm, with the first act taking the stage at 7:00pm. Admission is free and anyone 18+ can attend with a state ID.
A multitude of musical styles and genres are always to be expected at Biggest Mouth. This year’s competition will be no exception. The Wild Family is part of the 2014 line-up, and they are also the featured artists in this week’s installment of The Loft Sessions, a weekly video series that features some of Columbia’s best bands who ditch their amps for a stripped down acoustic performance.
Imagine a band that jams out acoustic elegance as profoundly as it creates sonic landscapes of rock and you will be picturing The Wild Family. Having garnered success across the city of Chicago, the band is fresh off the release of their self-titled EP. After learning and playing music together for years as kids growing up in Genoa, IL, brothers Jake and Zack Schweitzer joined forces with extended family members Graham Young and Kevin Koreman to create The Wild Family.
It started in the fall of 2012 as the group began practicing and writing their first material in the dorms of Columbia College. A unique sound was soon developed that mixed crooning melodies, intense guitar parts, and bold lyrics. Their lofty, well-trained vocal harmonies intertwined with their heavy drive of electrified rock that naturally encourages a significant amount of movement and dancing. Tracks such as "Gold, "White Shirt", and "Depths" gel with the broad spectrum of musical flavors easily found across Chicago and Columbia.
After a little over a year together as a band, they have made it to almost every notable stage in the Chicago area ranging from the Old Town School of Folk Music, to Subterranean, Beat Kitchen, Schuba's, SPACE, and more. Their soulful, energetic, and effortless live set has earned them a growing and eager fan base in a very short time. They recently traveled to SXSW to play 4 different showcases and are gearing up for a summer tour.
All efforts of the band will be on full display when they take the stage alongside 11 other acts April 24th at Biggest Mouth. Those competing will have a chance to win gear, studio time, a magazine spread, and even $1000 cash.
