With registration already under way for the Spring 2016 semester, many students might have questions about how the rest of their time at Columbia is going to unfold. Though registration goes until January 30th, it is never too early to go to the Advising Center.

Mary Rachel Fanning, the Advising Center’s Coordinator of Online Communications, was able to give some points on how the Columbia College can help you plan each and every semester.

What should students know about registering?
A few weeks before registration opens, students should check their Loopmail or OASIS to see their assigned registration day and time. It is important that students register as soon as possible to have the best selection of courses.

Students should also remove any registration holds, which can block you from registering on time! Check your OASIS account to see if you have an Immunization, SFS, or other registration hold.

How can the Advising Center help with registering?
During priority registration we go to a walk-in schedule to help as many students as possible. We recommend that students plan for registration early and meet with their advisor at the beginning of the semester to continue to cultivate a graduation plan.

How can students start or continue to prepare for their higher education goals?
Students should take advantage of the College Advising Center during their first year at Columbia, not their last. We believe the first step to achieving higher education goals is learning about yourself and identifying things you want to do and achieve. Academic planning starts there.

What other kinds of services does the Advising Center offer?
We specialize in helping students create graduation plans, navigate the college, but also help students look at the big picture of their time at Columbia. Is your major the right fit? Should you declare a minor? What opportunities are you taking advantage of outside of class? What is getting in the way of your success? When you don’t know where to go, come here.

The Advising Center is located at Suite 300 in 623 S. Wabash and is open during the week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., 5 p.m. on Friday.
