What is Columbia Cares?

The ColumbiaCares Fund was established in 2012 by students from the Fall Business & Entrepreneurship Event Management Practicum Class, working in partnership with Student Affairs. The students identified a need for an emergency fund to assist students who face unexpected challenges and emergencies. They launched ColumbiaCares to raise funds and support their fellow students. Since that time, the class continues to mount annual fundraising campaigns while Student Organizations, individual students, friends, family and the Columbia community contribute to the effort.

What are ColumbiaCare Packages?

There are many types of food banks on college campuses such as food banks that hold regular distributions and food banks that hold set shopping hours. The ColumbiaCare Packages Student Food Bank is designed for emergency need and serves students through referral or self-nomination.

ColumbiaCare Packages support current Columbia College Chicago students who are without food or experiencing food insecurity. As noted on the College and University Food Bank Alliance (CUFBA) website, “food insecurity has increasingly become an issue on college and university campuses (Hughes, 2011), and can pose a significant barrier to student success (Johnson).”

As a caring and engaged community, ColumbiaCare Packages broadens our commitment to support a well-rounded student experience offering emergency and/or critical support to students in need.
