Opening reception April 27, 4-6pm
Parallel Planet: Hip-hop Dance in China presents the first American survey of the field of Chinese hip-hop dance, showcasing works by dancers, designers, photographers, and visual artists who share a connection to hip-hop and a fascination with this culture’s unbridled expression of the self. Parallel Planet explores both underground and mainstream aspects of Chinese hip-hop dance. Works in the exhibition present Chinese hip-hop practitioners as devout followers of a foreign art form, meanwhile creatively developing it to reflect local contexts and to communicate across vastly disparate cultures. Through lenses of artists and pioneers from different areas in the hip-hop field, this show allows audiences to explore the redefined meaning of the hip-hop movement in China, and also brings up issues connecting the Chinese hip-hop dance industry to profound economic and social impacts.
Located on the bustling corner of Congress Parkway and Wabash Ave, C33 Gallery serves as an art gallery and meeting place for students. With its distinctive storefront windows, C33 is ideal for non-traditional media and site-specific installation. C33 houses up to 14 student exhibitions per school year and is the only open submission student gallery on campus. Any student at Columbia may submit a proposal to show their work in the space. If selected, students will receive a small stipend for materials as well as access to all of the galleries tools and supplies. The DEPS staff will also assist the student in the installation and preperation of her or his exhibition.
We are currently accepting proposals from students to show their work in the C33 Gallery for the Spring semester. Students may submit proposals for solo exhibitions or group exhibtions or projects.
