This website is currently being updated for SP16 Students.

Students that do not send in/confirm receipt of their ACT or SAT Scores to Undergraduate Admissions, or who do not have college credits in BOTH English and Mathematics, accepted by Columbia College Chicago, are required to take placements.

Please note that Writing and Reading Placements are now handled through Pegeen Reichert Powell in the English Department. Students that need these placements, should first email Pegeen: If you do not hear back within 3 business days(Mon.-Fri.), please email her again, or call: (312) 369-8231.

The Learning Studio’s New Student Placement continues to offer Compass Mathematics Placement Monday through Friday, year-round, except holidays at these start times: 9:30am or 1:00pm. No appointment needed. New or continuing students may simply arrive five minutes before the start time. A Photo I.D. is required. There is no charge for the Mathematics Placement.

Location: Learning Studio, 618 S. Michigan Avenue, First Floor. This building has a spiral staircase in the lobby, and fashion designs in the window.

Continuing Columbia Students may take placement year-round, except holidays. When possible, New students should take placement before their Orientation Date. If registering online first for other classes, please take your placements when you are on campus. Students will not be able to register for college-level mathematics courses without Compass Mathematics Placement.

Please check back with us soon for more information.

In order to ensure that students are placed into the appropriate level of mathematics and writing courses, Columbia uses SAT and ACT scores to determine which course is best for each student. Students who have submitted SAT or ACT scores and have confirmed receipt of their scores with Columbia’s Undergraduate Admissions,, do not need to do anything else. Even if you did not submit your SAT or ACT scores with your initial application, you should do one of the following:

  • New Freshmen (no college transfer credit) should submit SAT or ACT scores by Friday, July 3.
  • New Transfer Students should submit their SAT or ACT scores by Friday, June 19.
  • Students who did not take the SAT or ACT should make arrangements with New Student Placement to take the COMPASS test instead. Call: (312)369-8130.
