Music Business

About the B.A. in Music Business

The BA in Music Business equips students to pursue careers in the evolving music industry. Students learn the fundamental management concepts of the recorded music business, copyright, music publishing, online retail and services, artist management and music marketing. A focus on entrepreneurship and leadership allows music business majors to prepare themselves to be the next generation of innovative music industry executives.

Elective courses in the Business and Entrepreneurship department give students hands on management experiences through student run businesses that include a record label, a talent agency, a music publishing company, and an online distribution platform.

First Semester Classes

Freshman Students
Freshman management students are required to enroll in our business learning community. The learning community is specially designated sections of 28-1110, Introduction to Management and 28-1115, Entertainment Marketing,. To register for the learning community, please register for a section of 28-1110 with the title "Learning Community" (these are sections 01-05). Once you register for one of those courses, you will automatically be registered for a corresponding section of 28-1115, Entertainment Marketing. 

In addition to these two classes, the following majors should register for one "business of" class:

  • • Design Management: 28-1310 Business of Design
  • • Film Business Management: 28-1635 Business of Film
  • • Live and Performing Arts Management: 28-1718 Business of Live and Performing Arts
  • • Media Management: 28-1610 Business of Media
  • • Music Business: 28-1410 Business of Music
  • • Sports Management: 28-1710 Business of Professional Sports
  • • Visual Arts Management: 28-1270 Business of Visual Arts

Freshman should also take two LAS courses, such as Writing & Rhetoric (52-1151) and First-Semester Experience (48-1101 through 48-1115).

Transfer Students
Depending on your academic background, you are eligible take a variety of major courses. Many of our classes have prerequisites that are earned credit hours only. Please review the Business and Entrepreneurship Curriculum Guide and choose at least two core classes and one major class:

  • • Live and Performing Arts Management: 28-1718 Business of Live and Performing Arts
  • • Media Management: 28-1610 Business of Media
  • • Music Business: 28-1410 Business of Music
  • • Sports Management: 28-1710 Business of Professional Sports
  • • Visual Arts Management: 28-1270 Business of Visual Arts

Any students attempting to transfer Business courses from another college and/or university should contact Keirstin Lincoln at klincoln@colum.edu as soon as possible.

Please allow 2-3 weeks for the review of course materials. Business courses taken at the high school level are not eligible for credit in the major.
