Registration begins on March 19th for continuing degree-seeking students for both summer and fall registration. In the past summer and fall registration were two separate dates, but this year continuing students will be able to register for both sessions concurrently.

Satisfactory Academic Progress or SAP, refers to a basic set of three academic indicators – GPA, completion rate, and credits – that let’s the college know how a student is progressing academically and if that student may be experiencing difficulties matriculating. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, whose completion rate (defined as total credits attempted divided by total credits earned) slips below 67% or who have attempted more than 160 credit hours are not considered to be progressing academically, are delivered an official academic warning and are at risk for being dismissed.

On January 25th, Columbia sent six students and one staff representative to Baltimore, Maryland to attend the Creating Change conference on LGBTQ Equality. The students were sponsored by Columbia College and various departments within the college to attend the annual conference’s largest year, of almost 3,000 people of all social classes, religions and race — but all part of the LGBTQ community.

Each year the entire Manifest brand is rethought, with everything re-imagined from the Manifest website, to the buttons, posters and, of course, the iconic T-shirt. At the heart of this process is the student creative director whose design is the seed for the entire brand. This year’s Manifest student creative director is Rocio Lopez, a Venezuela native who moved to Chicago in 2006.

If you borrowed federal student loans during your time as a student, you must complete Federal Loan Exit Counseling before leaving Columbia in order to receive your diploma. Exit Counseling is an online tutorial, compiled by the Department of Education, which explains your “rights and responsibilities” as a borrower and also covers your repayment options after graduation.

PGA, or Please Generate Art, is a college-wide effort that unities students from all of Columbia’s graduate programs and showcases their work and creativity at Manifest, Columbia’s year-end urban arts festival. All current Columbia graduate students are eligible to submit a proposal to participate in the making of PGA 2012. Designers, performers, musicians, writers, builders, marketers and planners are all encouraged to submit their ideas and their talents.

Among colleges and universities we surveyed, six tickets is a generous per graduate allotment. The online ticket confirmation system will go live in early Spring and physical distribution of tickets will take place in the weeks prior to the ceremony. And with an increase in the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), proper sexual health and the practice of safer sex is absolutely essential. Though you might feel as though you and the object of your affection are immune from STIs, it is important to remember that everyone who engages in sex can be at risk, regardless of age, background, or sexual orientation. The Art + Design Department will be undergoing extensive construction on the 8th and 10th floors of 623 S. Wabash Ave. during the spring and summer 2013 semesters, affecting certain Art + Design classes that cannot be run during this time. Many of these courses are also open to students outside of the department. The department will be offering additional sections of these courses during the fall 2012 semester.

Classes at Columbia can be sometimes non-traditional, especially the undergraduate classes within the Center for Book and Paper Arts | 1104 S. Wabash, 2nd floor. Typically, courses in this department are for Graduate students, but there are three available for undergraduates in any major: Beginning Bookbinding, Letterpress Studio, and Paper Arts.

Echo Magazine is the “Creative Posse” student principle on steroids. Two journalism classes and an Art + Design class breaking bread to create a distinctive print product and a continuous stream of web content. There’s something for everyone interested in magazine journalism, layout and online content.

President Warrick Carter has chosen Jacob Watts’ image as the official commencement photo for the class of 2012 as part of the 2nd Annual Commencement Photo Competition.
