The Portfolio Center has announced the winners of the 2011 Weisman Awards. The Albert P. Weisman Award was established in 1974 to encourage Columbia College Chicago students to complete a significant body of work. The completion of a major work marks a student’s transition from experimentation and exploration to making a singular artistic statement. Weisman Award winners receive both artistic and financial support from the Portfolio Center, which sponsors the awards in the memory of the late Al Weisman.
Twenty-four graduate students, representing eight departments, were among the winners. The projects explore a variety of topics and themes using all forms of media. For example, Interdisciplinary Arts student Laura Miller’s An Unquiet Mind: The Untold Story of Isabelle Cadieux uses mixed media to explore the ideas and story of an unknown French Outsider artist, while exploring our own conceptions of history. Maggie Puckett, an Interdisciplinary Book & Paper student, won for her thesis project, which is based on the interaction between humans and the environment. Maggie’s fellow Book & Paper artists, Jana Sim, Matthew Aron, and Daniel Mellis also won for their work. Other winners included students in Film & Video, Photography, Creative Writing-Fiction, Interior Architecture, Art & Design, and AEMM.
