After a week of studies, job hassles and roommate problems, we need an escape. Luckily, the Columbia Whovians offer a couple of hours of space and time exploration with the Doctor and his companions. And what can we say? There’s just something about a time-traveling, regenerating doctor that sets our little hearts aflutter.
With around three-dozen members (and growing), the group watches and debates episodes, occasionally shares snacks (in appropriate areas, of course), and generally just basks in the warm, comforting glow of the TARDIS.
If you’re holding on to that Whovian cherry, don’t be shy. Club president Sarah Kaddatz says the group is more than willing to help catch a new member up. “Whovians love to talk about Doctor Who and explain it to newcomers. If we ask around and someone is present who has not seen the show, we are more than willing to break and explain it to them. I have been known to sit next to newcomers and explain what’s going on if they seem lost.”
Like any well-established series, diving in can be a daunting task. So many different doctors and companions and planets, and what the hell is a Dalek? But Kaddatz sees the ever-expanding universe and the revolving cast as a plus for newbies: “The best way to watch is to just jump right in somewhere and then work your way around if you like what you see… The fact is, everyone has their doctor that they prefer.”
The Columbia Whovians meet from 4 to 6 p.m. every Friday in Ferguson Hall. You can find them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter at @CCCWhovians.
