So it’s winter break and you’ve six glorious weeks of freedom stretching out before you. What are you going to do? While drinking hot chocolate and watching “Adventure Time” is admittedly a great time, there are definite perks to layering up and getting out in the city. Here are some Chicago events that trump practicing your Lumpy Space Princess impression in the bathroom mirror.
Holiday Celebrations
- Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier continues through January 6th. Favorite activities are indoor ice skating, the Ferris wheel, music performances and more. Admission is free, but if you plan on participating in any rides or attractions, you’ll need to purchase a wristband.
- Ice Skating at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. What better way to get some exercise and embrace winter than by strapping on some skates? Free and open to the public, and you can rent skates for $10. Visit the City of Chicago website for seasonal hours.
- Christkindlmarket Chicago boasts the largest traditional Christmas market outside of Europe through Christmas Eve. With hand-crafted ornaments, toys, traditional German food and candy-cane striped booths, nothing will get you in the holiday spirit faster.
- Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights continues until January 6. While most of the animals will be out of sight, the grounds are brilliant (in more ways than one). And best of all: It’s free!
New Year’s Eve
- Navy Pier’s New Year’s Eve Family Bash from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature music, a hip-hop dance showcase and fireworks immediately following. Free!
- New Year’s Eve Midnight Fireworks. What better way to seal the first kiss of 2013 than on the lakefront under a dazzling display of fireworks. Pucker up!
- Ride the CTA Like Mad! From 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., the CTA will be free to New Years Eve revelers.
