Spring is in the air…almost. Soon enough, it will be time to take back the streets and take long walks outside. Here are five hikes that are close, or easy to access, from the South Loop. You can enjoy a nice stroll and always be near a lunch spot. Perfect.

The beautiful Chicago Botanic Gardens features 328 acres of lush landscapes, both indoor and outdoor. Access the gardens via the Metra to Braeside that leaves from Ogilvie at 500 W. Madison. It’s a day-long hike!

Did you know there is an island east of the loop? That’s right, Northerly Island, is an expanse of land that was formerly an air base. Access it just south of the planetarium on Museum Campus. Bring a picnic and get ready to enjoy some isolated lakefront.

Promontory point features a historic park building and lovely views of downtown from Hyde Park. If you ride your bike down to 55th Street, you can’t miss it! Otherwise, take the Metra and walk towards the lake.
