These programs usually run in the J-session and summer and are open to all Columbia students.   • Prague: Writing Abroad

    Creative Writing Summer in Prague

    May 22-June 22, 2020

    The Creative Writing Summer in Prague program offers students the opportunity to live as writers abroad in one of Europe’s most spellbinding cities. Trace the steps of Kafka as you navigate the narrow cobblestone streets. Live, study, and create amid Prague's Gothic elegance and contemporary artistic atmosphere. Tours and field trips complement the course and students are allowed ample independent time to explore the city and surrounding regions and pursue their own stories.

    The Prague study program is open to all Columbia majors, both undergrad and graduate-level. Global Awareness credit applies.

    Session fees: $3,150

    Session fees include housing in shared apartments, airport transfer, transit passes for the duration of the program, use of classroom space including printing and photocopies, a city tour, Prague Fringe Theater festival tickets, a traditional Czech night out of music and dancing, a tour of the Jewish museum, visits to the Museum of Communism and Kafka museum, a Prague castle visit, an excursion to Terezin concentration camp, and welcome and end-of-session dinners. Session fees due not include flight, daily living expenses, or summer tuition.

  • BUSE 425/BUSE 535 European Experiments in Arts Policy and Management - Edinburgh, Scotland

    European Experiments in Arts Policy and Management | BUSE 425/535 | 3 Credits

    Edinburgh, Scotland
    The European Experiments in Arts Policy and Management takes students behind-the-scenes of two of the largest performing and visual arts festivals in the world: Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Edinburgh Art Festival. Students are immersed in the city’s annual international celebration of creatives, gaining first-hand, professional performance and artistic perspectives on managing contemporary arts and cultural events. Students experience the convergence of the arts and business through meetings with arts managers, entrepreneurs, performers, artists, and scholars.

    Students will stay at Queen Margaret University (QMU) throughout the 2-week duration in Edinburgh, experiencing live performances, exhibitions, and historic sites. The course includes an online component prior to arrival in Edinburgh and the final project is designed to allow each student to create a project specific to their own individual creative or professional interest.

    During the month of August Edinburgh is home to five festivals: Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, and Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

    The course is conducted during the College’s 15-week summer session beginning with an online component before the on-the-ground intensive 2-week stay in Edinburgh, Scotland July 26-August 8, 2020.

    The estimated special course fee for this program is $2,420 (this fee is subject to change). It does not include air fare, out-of-pocket expenses, and summer course tuition. The special course fee includes housing with breakfast, class-related field trips and entrance fees, transportation associated with program activities, several special meals and events and use of classroom facilities.

    This hybrid, experiential course provides students with a professional strategic marketing experience that expands global awareness. Students will have the opportunity to work with marketing and editorial teams of Cosmopolitan Magazine Czech Edition, develop strategic marketing plan for the magazine and present it to the magazine leadership. In the process, they will understand how cultural differences impact marketing strategies. While in Prague students will be immersed in a culturally rich city and its historically significant environs. They will visit several significant sites in and around Prague to learn about the culture, history and life in the Czech Republic. This six-credit hour program can count as an elective  towards all majors in Business and Entrepreneurship (both undergraduate and graduate) or as a college- wide elective. This course also satisfies the College’s Global Awareness credit requirements.

    Special course fee of $2500 is separate from tuition. Out of pocket costs (including flight) estimated at $2000. Standard tuition rates apply.

  • Theatre Workshop - Prague Quadrennial

    Prague for Theatrical Designers
         This is a travel and study experience for Design and Technical Theatre students. The students travel to Prague in the Czech Republic. They will attend the Prague Quadrennial: https://www.pq.cz/. The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space is the world’s largest performance design event – a presentation of contemporary work in a variety of performance design disciplines and genres including costume, stage, lighting, sound design, and theatre architecture for dance, opera, drama, site-specific, multi-media performances, and performance art.
        Students also get the chance to explore Prague, Observing the art, architecture and culture of this remarkable city. They will get the opportunity to see many different kinds of theatrical performances, from experimental site-specific pieces, to grand opera. The trip will include an excursion to see one of the few remaining complete and working baroque theatres. Students will be asked to keep a course journal and submit a reflection piece after returning.

    Course fee: $1520, plus standard Columbia tuition and fees

    Flight and meals will be additional expenses (estimated at around $1900)

    The Summer Dok Program takes place at the facilities of the Academy for International Education located in Bonn, Germany.  Bonn is the world’s hub for non-governmental organizations and a centrally located medium-sized city in Europe right on the Rhine river.  Participants in this 6-week program earn 6 School of Media Arts credits (a 3-credit Documentary Production course and three 1-credit Documentary Workshop courses).  Under the tutelage of faculty from Columbia College and AIB, students will learn how to research, develop, shoot, edit and complete and exhibit their 5-8 minute documentary film, radio documentary, photo series, or video installation within the 6-week long program.  The student experience is facilitated by the capable staff of the AIB, and offers an excellent working relationship with European music students attending the MUSICUBE Academy for film composers, located within the courtyard of the AIB complex. Columbia College documentary project crews are matched with AIB student staff and music students to form a collaborative team around a story idea or art concept situated anywhere in Europe (students travel via Europe’s trains; Cologne’s airport is also minutes away with very affordable flights). All courses are in English.  Students live with German host families to help deepen a sense of living and working in an European media production context.  Overnight and day-trip excursions to TV broadcasters, museums, and a variety of  historic sites in Berlin, Cologne, Bonn, and the beautiful Eifel region just south of Bonn are all included in the program.  Transportation passes, cell phones, production and postproduction equipment are provided by AIB.

    The Summer Dok Program is open to all Columbia College students who have finished a Foundations or Core within the School of Media Arts (CA and S, TV, CMI, Radio, IAM, and AAA), yet Photography, Art and Design, Dance, Theatre and other majors are also welcome.  Graduate Students are also welcome.  Documentary experience is preferred but not required.  Please consult with the Director of Summer Dok Programming, Ted Hardin (thardin@colum.edu) or the lead faculty, Michael Caplan (mpcaplan@colum.edu) to see whether this program will suit your needs.

  • Cinema and Television Arts in Florence, Italy

    Cinematic Art in the Land of Leonardo

    In this course students draw inspiration from Florentine Renaissance Art, Italian Opera Composers and Italian Cinema from the silent period to the present. A particular emphasis in on the Neo-Realist artists Rossellini, Visconti and De Sica, Fellini and other masters of the Golden Age, and modern auteurs like Nanni Moretti. Special attention is paid to visual perspective and composition; the impact of historical context on visual narrative; individual and collaborative approaches to creativity; and the role of patronage, apprenticeship and mentorship. An understanding of the fundamental artistic and narrative concepts that were either discovered or reborn during the Italian Renaissance is built through film screenings, classroom discussions, and visits to museums and galleries, all in parallel with planning and shooting a cinematic diary film that goes beyond the ‘travelogue’ to create a unique personal voice inspired by life in Florence.

    The course is open to all Columbia College students who have finished a Foundations or Core class within the School of Media Arts (CTVA, CMI, Radio, IAM, and AAA), as well as all other majors and Graduate students.

  • Global PR in Spain

    Many of today’s top global public relations agencies consider Madrid the best place to locate an office in Europe, and you’ll understand why when you join us for this two week Global PR course. 

    Students will learn the global public relations landscape and what it means to apply a “global mindset” in the backdrop of Madrid, Spain, considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a city of students.   This course has been designed to give a select cohort of students a deep appreciation for the rich arts and culture of Madrid through organized tours and visits, as well as the opportunity to collaborate on a project to apply Global PR approaches to a real-life client assignment.  Students will leave with an international portfolio piece to further differentiate themselves in a competitive job market.

    Program includes several pre-departure prep sessions to give students survival Spanish language skills as well as an appreciation for the history, culture, literature and art of both Spain and our host city, Madrid, in advance of the trip. Outside of scheduled classroom time in the mornings, visits are planned to major museums (e.g., Prado and Reina Sofia), historic and cultural attractions (e.g. Plaza Mayor and Retiro Park), and two group dinners in iconic restaurants known for Spanish guitar music and traditional cuisine. Students will  have ample free time to explore the city and surrounding historically rich towns accessible by bus or train, including Toledo and Segovia.

    The course fee of $1,870 covers lodging; breakfast and lunch or dinner every day; transfers in private bus from Madrid airport to Madrid and the return to the airport; two group meals and a Flamenco show; transportation pass covering trips on metro (subway), bus and trains within Madrid; Prado Museum and Royal Palace entrance and tours.   • Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

    56-1354HN Paleontology Field Observation & Methods (Honors): Petrified Forest National Park | 3 credit hours

    This 5-week Summer Honors course provides a hands-on introduction to paleontology field methods, including fossil reconnaissance, identification, and collection during a two-week field expedition to the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona. You will learn about the paleontology and geology of the park by reading and interpreting popular and scientific literature. Emphasis will be placed on detailed observation and documentation of vertebrate fossils and geologic context in a field notebook that will provide the basis for a final project interpreting your field experience. This course satisfies the Liberal Arts and Sciences Core Requirement for either 3 credit hours of Science (SC) or 3 credit hours of Science with Lab (SL).

    A special course fee (TBD) covers all food, lodgings, ground transportation, and admissions, but not airfare. The application deadline is in late March. Permission is required.

  • Documentary Journalism in Morocco

    This hybrid documentary course combines shooting and editing through a collaborative lab experience to produce short documentaries from Morocco. The course takes place online and on location from the historic town of Boujad, Morocco, near the Atlas Mountains. Postproduction begins in Morocco and is completed in Chicago working virtually and in person with Moroccan partners. Finished films are screened in Morocco and Chicago.

    Special course fee of $1,230 includes accommodations, transportation around Morocco and some meals. An overnight excursion to Marrakech is included. Airfare purchased separately.

    While studying abroad in Paris, students explore how marketing is critically linked to a firm’s global business objectives and they investigate how marketing and communication are influenced by cultural diversity. Students compare and contrast international marketing practices and business processes, and how these are impacted by cultural differences from a European perspective. Students use storytelling as an integral part of creating an effective marketing strategy.

    Study Creative Writing in the City of Lights

    While exploring the work of writers such as Ernest Hemingway and James Baldwin, and through deep interaction with the city of Paris and its rich literary heritage, students have the opportunity to experience firsthand life as a creative writer abroad, to see their work in the context of other writers’ works, and to examine the personal and social contexts for creativity. Class time and specific writing assignments will be supplemented by cultural field trips exploring the literary and cultural history of Paris.

    This program is open to all majors. Financial aid and Global Awareness credit may apply.

    Session fees: $3000 

    Session fees include airport transfer, shared three-star hotel accommodations with kitchenettes; daily breakfast; classroom use with printing; Paris transit passes; a city tour; a literary walking tour with lunch, and other cultural tours, a museum pass, a welcome lunch and end-of-session literary salon and celebration dinner. Airfare and daily incidentals are not included. Credits count as part of the spring semester.

    Students will investigate exhibitions in museums, commercial galleries, and cultural sites in and around Rome. Through first-hand observation, research, and reflection, students will analyze differing approaches to curatorial direction, exhibition design and production, interpretative methodologies, use of technology, and marketing and communication strategies. Particular attention will be paid to developing exhibitions for multinational, multicultural, and multilingual audiences as well as similarities and differences to American exhibition models. Planned site visits may include museums such as the Vatican Museum, Capitoline Museum, Borghese, Gallery Maxxi (designed by Zaha Hadid), the National Museum of Art from the 21st century, Macro: Museum of Contemporary Art; cultural sites including the Roman Forum, Pompeii, churches and historic sites; and leading commercial galleries.

    This J-session course offers an intensive two-week immersion in Rome's literature, art, history, and culture. Students read fiction, poetry, and nonfiction by noted authors; visit major sites, including the Colosseum, Vatican, Roman Forum, Pompeii, churches, museums and places associated with noted authors; and participate in writing workshops at Lorenzo d' Medici. Journal entries and reading responses lead to an extended story, essay, or digital project, which may be done in collaboration with students from the Business and Entrepreneurship Department.

  • Covering Europe: Ireland

    Covering Europe: Ireland | Jour 465 | 3 credits

    Spend two weeks during J-term in Dublin. Students from a range of majors will report, research, write, blog, take photos and more in Ireland's capital. You'll get a chance to meet some of the country's leading journalists and officials. Plus, we'll see some amazing sites and experience another culture.

    Estimated course fee $2,820 covers hotel, some in-country transportation and many meals. Instructor permission is required.

    Out-of-pocket expenses include flight, some meals, and other incidentals.  These costs are estimated at $1,750.

  • London Theatre Workshop

    London  | THEA 575 | 1 credit

    A one-week international theatre workshop course in London, England. Participants will receive practical classes in different aspects of professional theatre, from Columbia College Chicago faculty and from working theatre professionals in London. Students will also attend performances by theatre companies from the UK and around the world, ranging from contemporary physical and experimental work to Musicals and productions of Shakespeare’s plays. Other activities include workshops and tours at well-known theatrical venues like Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Royal National Theatre, and Stratford-upon-Avon.  Open to graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Photography in Ireland

    Study Abroad: Ireland | PHOT 475 / PHOT 575 |  3 credits

    This course is a three-week trip to Burren College of Art for Columbia College Chicago graduate students and upper-level undergraduate students.   Students take this class for 3 credits (Advanced Elective Credits).  Students have the opportunity to work daily on their own creative work in their own studio space at the Burren College of Art, located in Ballyvaughan, a beautiful costal village in County Clare on the west side of Ireland.  Students will participate in two seminar sessions taught by Conor McGrady, faculty member at BCA, and Kelli Connell, faculty member at CCC. This course includes a tour of the Burren and Connemara, and concludes with a three day field trip to Dublin to visit art galleries and museums.

    This course is designed to give aspiring young students a taste of what life might be like working at an Advertising Agency in New York City. Students visit a wide variety of influential, cutting edge firms and get exposure to some of the most innovative trends, students will develop a sense of where the industry is headed. Besides being the center of the Advertising Industry, New York City is the world’s capital for culture. Students will have exposure to museums, monuments and an opportunity to attend a Broadway play and explore the numerous neighbourhoods within the city.

  • Domestic: New York City - Fashion Studies in the Field

    FASH 387 Fashion Studies in the Field: New York City

    This course introduces students to New York City’s fashion industry.  Geared towards students planning to enter a fashion related profession, the course enhances their knowledge of NYC’s fashion industry including its history, design and production processes, merchandising strategies, and retailing techniques. Students will get a behind the scenes look at various aspects of the industry to learn about its future and the trends they need to prepare for.  The trip will begin with students attending the National Retail Federation’s 3-day student program (“The Big Show”); the remainder of the week will be spent touring NYC and meeting with fashion industry professionals in key roles, including product developers, fashion designers, fashion marketers, wholesale representatives, and/or corporate merchandisers, for example.

    This is a 3-credit hour hybrid course in which students will complete work remotely as well as attend face-to-face meetings before the culminating trip to NYC.

  • THEA 389 An Actor’s Guide to Hollywood

    This course is designed to give students a practical and applicable experience toward pursuing a career in Los Angeles. In a highly competitive business, the actor who is prepared to face the challenges has a much better chance of succeeding. Meeting in LA, this course will provide an intensive week of hands-on experience, lecture and demonstration with industry professionals. Students are responsible for their own travel and accommodations.

  • Domestic: Miami - Creative Industries

    BUSE 450/550 Creative Industry Trends: Miami | 3 Credits

    An intensive immersion course that explores one of America’s fastest growing cultural hubs. Students live in the heart of downtown Miami and discover how the city has leveraged a mix of public and private investments to transform it into a global epicenter and trendsetter in the creative industries. Curriculum includes field trips to some of the region’s most important cultural establishments and discussions with some its most innovative creative leaders. At the end of the course, students will have experienced the opportunities provided by Miami’s rich and growing arts and cultural landscape.
