Marvelous Freedom/Vigilance of Desire, Revisited

Taking its cue from San Francisco-based writer and performer D. Scot Miller’s AfroSurreal Manifesto: Black is the New Black, Marvelous Freedom: Vigilance of Desire, Revisited is a group exhibition that explores Chicago’s contemporary and emerging artists of color who approach art-making through an Afro-Surrealist lens. Curated by School of the Art Institute of Chicago BFA candidate, Alexandria Eregbu, Marvelous Freedom: Vigilance of Desire, Revisited engages the richness of Chicago’s Surrealist history in order to extend, expand, and re-impose new visions of 21st century Afro-Surrealist aesthetics and cultural concerns, reexamining the first Marvelous Freedom/Vigilance of Desire, the Surrealist exhibition that took place in Chicago in 1976.

Saturday, February 9, 2013 2:00 - 5:00pm: What Is Afro-Surreal? Tempestt Hazel leads a conversation with Marvelous Freedom artists and Penelope Rosemont, cofounder of the Chicago Surrealist movement. Garland Room, Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington Street.
Saturday, February 23, 2013, 2:00 - 5:00pm: A Conversation With The Artists, This program examines artists' work affiliated with the show, including readings and performances. The South Side Community Art Center, 3831 S. Michigan Avenue.
