Dawit L. Petros: Prospetto a Mare

The Balbo Monument, a gift from Benito Mussolini to commemorate Italo Balbo’s 1933 flight, stands between Soldier Field and Lake Michigan. “Prospetto a Mare” by Eritrea-born artist Dawit L. Petros investigates Italian colonialism’s influence on visual culture and memory, focusing on Chicago’s hidden colonial ties and the propaganda used in Italy’s colonial projects. Curated by Karen Irvine, this exhibition is part of Art Design Chicago, funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art and The Andy Warhol Foundation. Petros, an associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has exhibited internationally, including at Tate Modern and the Studio Museum in Harlem. 

The Efroymson Creative Writing Reading Series: Bonnie Jo Campbell

Hosted by the School of Communication, Culture, and Society, The Efroymson Creative Writing Reading Series is one of the most dynamic, aesthetically diverse events of its kind in the city. Bonnie Jo Campbell is an acclaimed American author renowned for her evocative stories set in the rural Midwest. Her notable works include the short story collection "American Salvage," which won the National Book Award for Fiction, and the novel "Once Upon a River." Campbell’s writing is celebrated for its emotional depth and vivid portrayal of human resilience and rural life. 

Experiencing Time/Embodying Rhythm Symposium 
September 19-20, performances at 1 p.m. and 7: 30 p.m.  
The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, 1306 S. Michigan Ave.   
Admission: $40 public; individual events: $15 public; free to Columbia College Chicago students.  
This two-day event explores the multifaceted role of rhythm in our world. Co-curated by Lisa Gonzales and Darrell Jones, the symposium will feature cyphers, movement sessions, panels, workshops, and more, exploring the pervasive role of rhythm in movement, music, and language. The event includes showcase performances on September 20 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., highlighting diverse works by emerging and established artists. 

Sheldon Patinkin: The Life, Laughs, and Legacy

Columbia College Chicago Getz Theatre Center, 72 E. 11th St. 
Admission: Free, with suggested donation to the Sheldon Patinkin Award 
This event marks the 10th anniversary of Sheldon Patinkin's passing and acknowledges his significant impact on Columbia’s Theatre program. The schedule includes a panel discussion from 1-2:30 p.m. featuring former colleagues and students, followed by a reception, tours of the Getz Theatre Center, and an open forum.  

She’s Auspicious

Admission: $30 public; $20 students.  
Kalapriya in collaboration with The Dance Center Columbia College Chicago presents the acclaimed production, “She’s Auspicious,” by Mythili Prakash. A full-length dance and music work featuring an all-female cast, this work blurs the lines between “goddess” and “woman” to explore the intricate interplay between goddess worship and the treatment of women in society.
