College Art Association Conference: An Evening at Columbia College
Weaving, sewing, crocheting and embroidering are art forms that help sustain a connection to cultural history and identity. Interlacing Threads present the work of seven artists who fuse these traditional techniques with unconventional materials and various mediums to achieve complex work that lies beyond the decorative. Ultimately, the work in the exhibition forges a greater understanding of the similar underpinnings of worldwide cultures and common social issues.

In conjunction with the exhibition Interlacing Threads: Traditional Techniques | Contemporary
Perspectives, the Hokin Project invites you to a lecture by participating artist, Annet Couwenberg (www.annetcouwenberg.com). The lecture focuses on Couwenberg’s time as an artist in residence at Willem de Kooning Academie in The Netherlands, where she worked on a collaborative project with Muslim Women in Rotterdam. Couwenberg will discuss her “Sewing Sessions,” and the ways they opened up to extensive dialogues on the diverse views of fashion, politics, faith, beauty, modesty and cultural diversity held by Dutch Muslims. In her collaborative sewing sessions, Couwenberg discovered an effective setting for discussions about cultural displacement, relational aesthetics and will address how this has influenced her other works. This event is free and open to the public.
EL STITCH Y BITCH GATHERING @ HOKIN GALLERY

Join us for a fun and informal gathering with the Chicago-based collective, El Stitch y Bitch.
A diverse community of 20-30 year old crafters, El Stitch y Bitch can often be found piled in a members' living room, at local cafes, in community-based arts organizations and festivals, but this time around will be taking over the Hokin Gallery for one night! The collective is dedicated to providing a space for all crafters to share their ideas and those interested in getting to know other knitters, crocheters and fiber artists. So be sure to bring your needles, hooks, and/or current project to work on!
