Dylan Yarbrough Sompasauna
March 2 -26, 2020
Sompasauna features new work by Dylan Yarbrough created in Finland, funded by the Stuart R. Abelson Award. This ongoing photography project documents a communal bathing space, known as Sompasauna. Nestled between the urban wasteland of a former harbor and the Baltic Sea, the community welcomes visitors regardless of gender, race, class, nationality, or any other disposition. Visitors are expected to coexist in peace.
Construction of luxury condos in the area is expected to threaten the existence of this place. Until then, Sompasauna inspires a diverse sub-culture of people who celebrate the notion of egalitarian bathing space. This body of work raises questions about place, community, trust, and larger expectations of well-being in society.
This exhibition is partially sponsored by Columbia College’s Photography Department and the Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship. The Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship was established to encourage international travel among graduate Photography students while completing a specific project and to support the experience by assisting with the costs of travel.
