Sylvie Harris: The Ancestry of Home

Note: All visitors must RSVP via Eventbrite for entry to the exhibition during open hours. The Arcade will be closed Wed, Nov 23–Sun, Nov 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday break. DEPS’ galleries will be closed for the holidays from Monday, December 19, 2022, to Sunday January 8, 2023.
In 2021, Sylvie Harris visited Poland to trace her family’s cultural traditions back to her great-grandmother’s homeland and to examine how they endure in the domestic space. After growing up in a family devoted to tradition and routine, Harris considers the places where these rituals are carried out and how they influence our relationship to the home. Through photographs, video and textile installations using traditional costume fabric built as functional domestic objects, Harris addresses the importance of home in cultural traditions that endure through generations.
This exhibition is partially sponsored by Columbia College’s Photography Department and the Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship. The Stuart R. Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship was established to encourage international travel among Photography graduate students while completing a specific project and to support the experience by assisting with the costs of travel.
