Requesting Interpreting Services
For all interpreting requests please contact the Interpreting Services Manager, Duriyah Wilborn, at 312-369-8295.
- Please note, we recommend three business days’ notice to request interpreters. While Interpreting Services will accept requests made less than three business days, but due to limited resources and the shortage of qualified interpreters, Interpreting Services may not be able to schedule the interpreters on such short notice.
- All interpreting services requests are billed at a two-hour minimum.
- When canceling interpreting services please do so twenty-four hours in advance of the assignment or the assignment will be billed at the standard interpreting rates.
For general questions, please contact Interpreting Services at interpretingservices@colum.edu.
For immediate concerns, please contact Duriyah Wilborn (dwilborn@colum.edu) or 312-369-8295. Thank you!

General Information about Having Deaf Students and Interpreters in the Classroom
- Deaf students should be treated with the same level of academic expectations as other students attending classes. Address Deaf students as you would another student. Speak directly to the student, not the interpreter.
- All audio-visual materials presented in class must be captioned.
- A notetaker may be requested.
- Please provide copies of all handouts to the interpreter(s) and inform Interpreting Services about any changes.
- Most classes have a team of two interpreters assigned to them. The interpreters at the College are not students.
- Interpreters are assigned to specific classes and should be in regular attendance.
- Interpreters should not be encouraged to participate in classroom proceedings for any reason.
- Please make any additional classroom related interpreting requests in a timely manner.
- Please note that the ASL-English Interpretation Department and Interpreting Services are separate entities.
