How do I find a notetaker?
If peer notetaker is listed on the accommodation letter, the specific instructions for the instructor are now included on the accommodation letter. Please read the provided script to the class, and post it on Canvas, asking for a volunteer, even if the class is a web or hybrid class.
When a student volunteers, direct them to the following link: https://app.joinhandshake.com/emp/jobs/5589248
I am a helpful guide about the application process!
As always, do NOT tell the notetaker the identity of the person needing the notes. SSD arranges for the anonymous exchange of notes.
If you have any further questions regarding notetaker accommodations, please feel free to reach out to our office via email at ssd@colum.edu or by phone at (312) 369-8296.
How does a student become one?
Each class you take notes for during a semester earns you $100.00 at the end of the semester. Taking notes for 3 classes? That's $300.00!
YOU MUST BE RECRUITED BY A TEACHER, STUDENT, OR SSD.
Some students on campus require a notetaker in their classes. A notetaker is a student who provides copies of their notes in a timely manner anonymously. The notetaker request must have been presented to your class by your professor. They will have shared the following with you if someone in your class is looking for a notetaker:
“A student in our class needs a notetaker, a person who is willing to share copies of their notes. To be a notetaker, you need to attend class regularly, take legible notes, and provide copies of your notes in a timely manner. Notetakers will upload their notes to the Services for Students with Disabilities MySSD web page assigned to them. It's easy!"
What if I can't find one?
Talk to a student in your class who you believe is a “good student.” Ask that student individually if they would be willing to make copies of their notes. It is really easy: they upload them to a MySSD page each week. That’s it. The students needing the notes get an email when notes are uploaded, and they can download them.
If you post your power points and notes for students, or if you have notes that you are willing to share, then that will be sufficient. Please let the student and SSD know. SSD will modify the student’s accommodation letter for your class.
