Our events aim to celebrate, recognize, and educate the diverse student population of Columbia. From
large-scale celebrations like our artist showcases to intimate gatherings such as coffee chats and

SIGNATURE EVENTS

Día de los Muertos

Our Día de Los Muertos Celebración started with a small altar on our office window display and, within a year, has grown into a multi-altar, large window display event. Imagined by our Education and Events Coordinator, Anakaren Pinto, this event is very dear to her. It begins with the installation of an Ofrenda or Ofrendas designed and curated by our students and/or the SDI team. Upon completion, we celebrate the Día de Los Muertos tradition, acknowledging all who contributed to the ofrenda creation. Student performers are invited to showcase their musical and artistic talents. Of course, Pan de Muerto and Chocolate Caliente (Mexican Hot Chocolate) are always part of this celebration!

Black Souls Welcome

Created by Columbia alum Angel Page Smigielski, Black Souls Welcome is a program our team is honored to continue and expand. BSW showcases the talent and art of Columbia students, highlighting artists from various mediums and backgrounds who portray the many facets of Black life. We celebrate the art showcase with an opening celebration where performing artists also have the opportunity to display their talents.

Uplift: Women's Week

Uplift is an evolving program conceived by our Education and Events Coordinator, Anakaren Pinto, and our Director, Charee Mosby-Holloway. This program inaugurates the celebration of Women's History Month, kicking off with a morning brunch where students can celebrate each other and learn about the upcoming events. This week-long series pays homage to the historical strides women have made toward equity and highlights ongoing efforts to envision and create liberatory futures. Traditionally, the program includes a week of events in partnership with multiple Columbia offices, dedicated to celebrating women.
