The Dean of Students Office works to build a safe, inclusive, supportive, and accountable community for all students at Columbia College Chicago. Our support departments work to support students through a variety of programs, services, and activities that enhance student success.

• Meet the Dean of Students: Douglas Eck

  Dr. Douglas Eck joined the Columbia College Chicago community in September 2021. Originally from the western Illinois region, Dean Eck earned his Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Western Illinois University. While at WIU, Dean Eck was involved in many facets of Student Affairs work, from leading a student organization and being a Resident Assistant, to serving on the Judicial Board and working as an Orientation Leader. "I credit my time at WIU for opening so many doors to student success to me. WIU exposed me to the career possibilities in Student Affairs; what was my passion in undergrad remains my passion as professional!"

  Dean Eck earned his Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University and a Doctorate in Education from City University in Seattle. Dr. Eck's dissertation analyzed the variables likely to influence organizational and institutional commitment among student affairs professionals. Prior to joining Columbia, Dean Eck served as an Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Houston; Associate Director of Residence Life at Lake Forest College, and multiple roles in student housing at OSU.

  "Not only am I excited to return to Illinois and live in my favorite city, but it is an honor to support so many students who are passionate about their studies and focused on so many fields of creativity. There is no more rewarding experience as a professional than watching students become masters of their craft."

  The units within the Dean of Students Office include: Housing & Residential Experience, Equity Issues (Title IX), Counseling Center, Student Health, Services for Students with Disabilities, Student Relations, and Student Assistance and Community Standards. We work collaboratively with all other areas of the College to provide seamless support. Our office is located at 623. S. Wabash Avenue in suite 303.   As part of the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, Columbia College Chicago has placed renewed emphasis and priority on student wellness. Recognizing the complexities that define and contribute to an individual's wellness, we are excited to embark on an aggressive plan toward understanding, engaging, and improving Columbia students' wellness and wellbeing.

  The Council's membership has been formed, and the group will begin its work in August 2023.
